Problem

A mechanic operates a hydraulic jack with pistons of areas A1=3.0 cm2A_1 = 3.0\,\text{cm}^2 (small) and A2=75 cm2A_2 = 75\,\text{cm}^2 (large). The small piston is pushed down by 12 cm12\,\text{cm}. The jack is ideal (no losses). (i) Calculate the distance through which the large piston rises. (ii) If the weight supported by the large piston is 1.5×104 N1.5\times10^{4}\,\text{N}, determine the minimum force that must be applied on the small piston.
