Problem

Earth and its natural satellite, the Moon, interact gravitationally as an isolated two-body system. A student claims that because Earth is much more massive than the Moon, the gravitational force Earth exerts on the Moon must be far greater than the force the Moon exerts on Earth. (a) Describe how the magnitudes of the two gravitational interaction forces actually compare, citing the relevant physical principle. (b) Explain why the vastly different masses of Earth and the Moon lead to dramatically different accelerations for the two bodies even though the forces are the same magnitude. (c) Identify the line along which each force acts and discuss why this geometric feature is essential when predicting the subsequent motion of the two-body system.
