Problem

A wooden block is placed on a rough fixed plane whose inclination to the horizontal can be gradually increased. The coefficient of static friction between the block and the plane is μs\mu_s. (i) Write the equilibrium equations of the block at the instant just before it begins to slide downward. (ii) Derive an expression for the critical angle θc\theta_c at which sliding begins and prove that tan⁡θc=μs\tan\theta_c = \mu_s. (iii) Calculate θc\theta_c (to the nearest whole degree) when μs=0.30\mu_s = 0.30.
