Problem
A student performs an experiment with two small identical conducting spheres placed on a smooth insulating table.
(a) The spheres carry charges +3.0μC and −2.0μC respectively and are kept 0.10m apart in air. Calculate the magnitude of the electrostatic force each sphere experiences and state its direction on the +3.0μC sphere with respect to the other.
(b) The spheres are gently moved apart until the force calculated in part (a) becomes exactly one-third of its initial value while the charges remain unchanged. Determine the new separation between the spheres.
(c) Express the answer obtained in part (b) in millimetres to the nearest whole number.
