Problem

A student standing on level ground observes the top of a vertical pole. The horizontal distance between the student and the pole is 40 m, and the angle of elevation to the top of the pole is 60°. Answer the following questions based on this situation. (i) Define the terms "angle of elevation" and "angle of depression". (ii) Draw a rough, labelled diagram to represent the above situation, clearly marking the right angle, the given distance and the given angle. (iii) In the ratio tan⁡60∘\tan 60^\circ written for this situation, identify which side of the right-angled triangle is taken as the numerator and which as the denominator. Give reasons for your answer.
