Problem

A man who can swim at velocity vv relative to water wants to cross a river of width bb, flowing with speed uu. (1) The minimum time in which he can cross the river is bv\frac{b}{v}. (2) He can reach a point exactly opposite on the bank in time t=bv2−u2t=\frac{b}{\sqrt{v^2-u^2}} if v>uv>u. (3) He cannot reach the point exactly opposite on the bank if u>vu>v. (4) He cannot reach the point exactly opposite on the bank if v>uv>u.
