Problem

A 10 kg10\,\text{kg} mass weighs 98 N98\,\text{N} on Earth’s surface. The mass is first lowered into a mine to a depth of 80 km80\,\text{km} and later lifted to a certain altitude above the surface such that its weight becomes exactly the same as inside the mine. Take Earth’s radius R=6.4×103 kmR = 6.4 \times 10^{3}\,\text{km}. Answer the following. (i) Calculate the weight of the mass at the 80 km80\,\text{km} depth. (ii) Determine the altitude above the surface at which the mass will have the same weight as inside the mine. (iii) State whether the mass of the body has changed in either process and justify your answer briefly.
