Problem

Two point masses are fixed on the xx–yy plane: M1=4 kgM_1=4\,\text{kg} at the origin (0,0)(0,0) and M2=6 kgM_2=6\,\text{kg} at (0.80 m,0)(0.80\,\text{m},0). A point PP has coordinates (0.40 m,0.30 m)(0.40\,\text{m},0.30\,\text{m}). (i) Resolve and write the xx- and yy-components of the gravitational field strengths E1\mathbf{E}_1 and E2\mathbf{E}_2 produced at PP by M1M_1 and M2M_2 respectively. (ii) Hence compute the components, magnitude, and direction (angle with the positive xx-axis) of the net field at PP. (iii) Discuss briefly how the result would change if M2M_2 were moved farther away along the positive xx-axis while all other data remained unchanged.
