Problem

The displacement xx (in metres) of a particle moving along a straight line varies with time tt (in seconds) as described below: • For 0≤t≤5 s0 \leq t \leq 5\,\text{s}, displacement increases uniformly from 0 m0\,\text{m} to 10 m10\,\text{m}. • For 5 s<t≤10 s5\,\text{s} < t \leq 10\,\text{s}, displacement increases from 10 m10\,\text{m} to 40 m40\,\text{m} with constant acceleration. • For 10 s<t≤13 s10\,\text{s} < t \leq 13\,\text{s}, displacement remains constant at 40 m40\,\text{m}. Answer the following: (i) Draw the position–time (xx–tt) graph representing the motion for the interval 0≤t≤13 s0 \leq t \leq 13\,\text{s}. (ii) From the graph, determine the instantaneous velocity of the particle at t=5 st = 5\,\text{s}. (iii) Determine the magnitude of the constant acceleration during the interval 5 s<t≤10 s5\,\text{s} < t \leq 10\,\text{s}. (iv) Draw the corresponding velocity–time (vv–tt) graph for the complete 13 s13\,\text{s} of motion.
