Problem

A solid rectangular block has mass 240 g240\,\text{g} and its dimensions are 5 cm×3 cm×2 cm5\,\text{cm}\times 3\,\text{cm}\times 2\,\text{cm}. (i) Calculate the density of the block in g cm−3\text{g\,cm}^{-3}. (Take the volume of the block to be the product of its dimensions.) (ii) Express the density obtained in part (i) in kg m−3\text{kg\,m}^{-3}. (Use 1 cm3=1×10−6 m31\,\text{cm}^{3}=1\times 10^{-6}\,\text{m}^{3}.) (iii) Water has a density of 1 g cm−31\,\text{g\,cm}^{-3}. Will the block float or sink in water? Give a reason for your answer.
