Problem

Two stones X and Y are studied by plotting their kinetic energy against v2v^2. For stone X the line passes through v2=2 m2/s2,  KE=4 Jv^2 = 2\,\text{m}^2/\text{s}^2,\; KE = 4\,\text{J} and v2=8 m2/s2,  KE=16 Jv^2 = 8\,\text{m}^2/\text{s}^2,\; KE = 16\,\text{J}. For stone Y the line passes through v2=3 m2/s2,  KE=9 Jv^2 = 3\,\text{m}^2/\text{s}^2,\; KE = 9\,\text{J} and v2=12 m2/s2,  KE=36 Jv^2 = 12\,\text{m}^2/\text{s}^2,\; KE = 36\,\text{J}. (a) Determine the mass of each stone. (b) For each stone, calculate the speed required for it to possess 50 J50\,\text{J} of kinetic energy.
