Problem

Consider the family of solids {Vn}\{V_n\} indexed by the positive integer nn. Each solid VnV_n has its base region in the xyxy-plane equal to the rectangle 0≤x≤L0\le x\le L, 0≤y≤W0\le y\le W, where LL and WW are positive real constants. Beginning at x=0x=0 and moving toward x=Lx=L, cross sections taken perpendicular to the xx-axis repeat a two-segment cycle of total length dd units: 1. On the first sub-interval of length d2\dfrac{d}{2} the cross section is a square whose side length equals WW. 2. On the next sub-interval of length d2\dfrac{d}{2} the cross section is a rectangle whose height is kWkW for some fixed constant k>0k>0 and whose base equals WW. Exactly nn complete cycles fit in the interval 0≤x≤L0\le x\le L, so that L=ndL=nd. (a) Derive a closed-form expression for the volume VnV_n in terms of n,d,W,n, d, W, and kk. (b) Express VnV_n solely as a function of L,W,L, W, and kk by eliminating dd and nn. (c) Suppose k=13k=\tfrac{1}{3}, W=2W=2, and L=15L=15. Compute the exact numerical value of the corresponding volume. (d) Holding LL and WW fixed, determine the value of kk that minimizes the volume and justify that your result gives a global minimum on k>0k>0.
