Problem

An object starts with an initial velocity uu and moves in a straight line. For the first time interval t1t_1 it experiences a uniform acceleration a1a_1. Immediately afterward, for a further interval t2t_2, it moves with a different uniform acceleration a2a_2 in the same line. (a) Derive expressions for: (i) the final velocity after the full time t1+t2t_1 + t_2, and (ii) the total displacement during the two intervals, in terms of uu, a1a_1, a2a_2, t1t_1 and t2t_2. (b) Using your results, calculate the final velocity and total displacement when u=4u = 4 m s⁻¹, a1=1.5a_1 = 1.5 m s⁻², t1=6t_1 = 6 s, a2=−2a_2 = -2 m s⁻² and t2=3t_2 = 3 s.
