Problem

Three point charges are fixed collinearly in air. Charge qq is at the origin, charge 4q4q at x=ax=a, and another charge qq at x=2ax=2a. (i) For a point PP located on the xx–axis between the first two charges at a coordinate xx (where 0<x<a0<x<a), write the expression for the net electric field E(x)E(x) in terms of qq, aa, and xx. (ii) Set E(x)=0E(x)=0 and solve for xx to find the position(s) between the first two charges where the electric field vanishes. (iii) Verify algebraically whether any additional point of zero field exists on the line segment between x=ax=a and x=2ax=2a or outside the outer charges. Provide logical reasoning for your conclusion.
