Problem

A decorative indoor fountain is constructed by inserting a small nozzle through the side wall of a large cylindrical tank. The nozzle is located hh metres below the constant water surface maintained inside the tank by slow, steady inflow from above. The nozzle opening has a circular cross-sectional area of 2.0×10−5 m22.0\times10^{-5}\,\text{m}^{2}. The fluid is fresh water with density ρ=1000 kg m−3\rho = 1000\,\text{kg}\,\text{m}^{-3}, and air resistance is negligible. Designers want the water jet to rise to a maximum height of 2.5 m2.5\,\text{m} above the nozzle. (a) Determine the minimum value of hh that will achieve the desired jet height. (b) Using your result from part (a), calculate the volume flow rate of water exiting the nozzle. (c) Compute the mass of water that lands back on the collection basin each minute once the fountain operates at steady state.
