Problem

Three forces act on a particle in a plane: • A\mathbf{A} has magnitude 6 N6\,\text{N} and is directed 30∘30^{\circ} above the positive xx–axis. • B\mathbf{B} has magnitude 5 N5\,\text{N} and is directed 40∘40^{\circ} below the positive xx–axis (fourth quadrant). • C\mathbf{C} has magnitude 4 N4\,\text{N} and is directed along the negative yy–axis. Using the scale 1 cm=1 N1\,\text{cm}=1\,\text{N}: (i) Draw the three vectors from a common origin. (ii) By suitable constructions obtain the resultant R=A−B+C\mathbf{R}=\mathbf{A}-\mathbf{B}+\mathbf{C}. (iii) Measure the magnitude and direction of R\mathbf{R} with respect to the positive xx–axis. (iv) Resolve A\mathbf{A}, B\mathbf{B} and C\mathbf{C} into rectangular components, calculate R\mathbf{R} algebraically and compare your numerical result with the graphical one.
