Problem
An ideal gas initially occupies 2.00 L at a pressure of 1.00 × 10⁵ Pa and a temperature of 0 °C. The gas is then simultaneously compressed and heated so that its final volume is 0.500 L and its final temperature is 150 °C.
(a) Determine the final pressure of the gas after this single step. Show all algebraic steps clearly and include appropriate units.
(b) Immediately after the compression–heating step, the gas is allowed to cool at constant volume back to 0 °C. Calculate the pressure of the gas at the end of this cooling step.
(c) Interpret the results of parts (a) and (b) to explain how they illustrate the relationships among pressure, volume, and temperature for an ideal gas undergoing successive processes.
