A hiker starts from a campsite taken as the origin O of a rectangular coordinate system (units in km). After a long trek the hiker reaches a picnic spot whose coordinates are (3,4).
(i) Define displacement of a particle in two dimensions.
(ii) Write the displacement vector of the hiker from the campsite to the picnic spot in unit–vector notation.
(iii) The actual length of the path followed by the hiker is 10 km. Explain briefly why this value differs from the magnitude of the displacement vector.
