Problem

Let the quadratic function be y=x2+kx+1y = x^2 + kx + 1, where kk is a real constant. (i) Find dydx\dfrac{dy}{dx} in terms of xx and kk. (ii) The tangent to the curve at the point where x=1x = 1 passes through the point (3,−5)(3, -5). Determine the value of kk that satisfies this condition. (iii) For the value of kk obtained in part (ii), obtain the equations of (a) the tangent and (b) the normal to the curve at x=1x = 1.
