Problem
A 10.0 L cylindrical vessel contains 1.00 mol of O₂(g) at 150 K. The vessel is equipped with an accurate pressure gauge calibrated at this temperature.
(a) Calculate the pressure that would be expected for an ideal sample of O₂(g) under these conditions. Show your work.
(b) The actual pressure observed in the experiment is 2.80 atm. Calculate the percent deviation of the measured pressure from the ideal pressure, using the ideal value as the reference.
(c) State whether the deviation you calculated in part (b) is positive or negative, and explain in molecular terms why this sign is expected under the stated conditions.
(d) Predict qualitatively, with justification, how the percent deviation would change if the volume of the vessel were suddenly reduced to 5.0 L while the temperature remained at 150 K.
