Problem

A 0.040 mol0.040\,\text{mol} sample of an ideal gas is initially at pressure P1=1.2×105 PaP_1=1.2\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa} and volume V1=500 cm3V_1=500\,\text{cm}^3 at temperature T1T_1. The gas is subjected to the following two-step sequence: Step 1 (Heating at constant volume): The temperature of the gas is increased by 75 K75\,\text{K}. Step 2 (Expansion at constant temperature): While the temperature is held fixed at the new value from Step 1, the gas expands until its pressure once again equals 1.2×105 Pa1.2\times10^{5}\,\text{Pa}. Ignore heat losses to the surroundings except as described above. (a) Calculate the pressure P2P_2 of the gas at the end of Step 1. (b) Determine the final volume V3V_3 of the gas after Step 2. (c) Find the ratio V3V1\dfrac{V_3}{V_1}.
