Problem

Let P(4,0)P(4,0) and Q(0,5)Q(0,5) be two points in the plane. A line L1L_{1} passes through PP and is inclined at 45∘45^{\circ} to the positive xx-axis. A second line L2L_{2} passes through QQ and is perpendicular to L1L_{1}. (i) Find the equations of L1L_{1} and L2L_{2}. (ii) A line L3L_{3} is drawn through QQ parallel to L1L_{1} and a line L4L_{4} is drawn through PP parallel to L2L_{2}. Obtain the equations of L3L_{3} and L4L_{4}. (iii) The four lines L1,L2,L3,L4L_{1},L_{2},L_{3},L_{4} enclose a quadrilateral. Prove that this quadrilateral is a rectangle and calculate its area.
