Problem
In a certain automobile, the brake pedal pushes a master-cylinder piston of area 3.0 cm2. The brake lines carry the fluid to four identical wheel-cylinder pistons, each having an area of 6.5 cm2. The driver applies a force of 450 N on the brake pedal, which acts directly on the master-cylinder piston.
(i) Calculate the pressure developed inside the brake fluid when the pedal is pressed.
(ii) Determine the force exerted by the fluid on each wheel-cylinder piston.
(iii) Find the total force exerted simultaneously on all four wheel-cylinder pistons.
(iv) Compute the mechanical advantage offered by the complete brake system, defined as the ratio of total output force at the wheel cylinders to the input force applied by the driver.
