Problem

A cylindrical conductor of resistivity ρ\rho has length LL. Its radius varies uniformly from r1r_1 at one end to r2r_2 at the other end (r2>r1r_2 > r_1). (i) Consider a thin slice of thickness dxdx cut at a distance xx from the end where the radius is r1r_1. If the radius at this position is r(x)r(x), write an expression for the resistance dRdR of this slice. (ii) Using the linear variation of the radius along the length, derive an expression for the total resistance RR in terms of ρ\rho, LL, r1r_1, and r2r_2. (iii) Show explicitly that when r1=r2r_1 = r_2, your expression reduces to the standard formula for the resistance of a uniform cylindrical wire.
