Problem

A series RLC circuit of resistance RR, inductive reactance XLX_{L} and capacitive reactance XCX_{C} is driven by an a.c. source of angular frequency ω\omega. (i) Starting with the expression for the impedance ZZ, show that at the resonant frequency the impedance reduces to RR. (ii) Hence prove that the current amplitude in the circuit is maximum at resonance. (iii) Briefly comment on the physical significance of this result for practical a.c. circuits.
