Problem

According to Newton’s law of viscosity, the tangential force FF required to maintain a velocity gradient dvdx\dfrac{dv}{dx} between two parallel layers of a fluid of area AA is F=ηA(dvdx),F = \eta A\left(\dfrac{dv}{dx}\right), where η\eta is the coefficient of viscosity. (a) Deduce the dimensional formula of η\eta and write its SI unit. (b) State whether η\eta is a base quantity or a derived quantity, giving a reason for your choice. (c) For flow in a pipe, the Reynolds number is defined as Re=ρvLη,\text{Re} = \dfrac{\rho v L}{\eta}, where ρ\rho is the density of the fluid, vv its mean speed, and LL a characteristic length of the pipe. Using dimensional analysis, prove that the Reynolds number is dimensionless.
