Problem
A small neutral solid aluminum sphere is suspended from an insulating nylon thread. A negatively charged plastic rod is slowly brought to within a few centimeters of the sphere but never makes physical contact. The sphere and rod are otherwise isolated from their surroundings.
(a) Describe qualitatively how the distribution of electric charge within and on the surface of the aluminum sphere changes as the charged rod approaches. Clearly indicate where any excess charge accumulates and the relative sign of that charge.
(b) State and justify whether the net charge of the aluminum sphere changes during this process.
(c) While the rod is still in position, the sphere is momentarily connected to the Earth with a thin conducting wire that is then removed. Predict the final net charge on the sphere after the wire is removed and describe its distribution. Explain your reasoning, making explicit reference to conservation of charge.
