Problem
Three 100.0 mL aqueous solutions, each at 25 °C, are poured simultaneously into a single beaker:
• 0.20 M lead(II) nitrate
• 0.20 M potassium iodide
• 0.20 M sodium nitrate
After gentle swirling, a bright yellow solid is observed in the mixture.
Respond to the tasks below.
(a) Identify the formula of the solid that forms and explain your choice based on solubility rules.
(b) Write the balanced net ionic equation for the formation of the solid identified in part (a).
(c) List all ions that are spectators in the overall chemical change that occurs when the three solutions are combined, and calculate the total electric charge (in coulombs per liter of mixture) represented by these spectator ions after the reaction has gone to completion. Assume the volume change on mixing is negligible.
(d) Discuss how the presence of the sodium nitrate solution influences the list of spectator ions you reported in part (c).
