Problem
A rectangular metal sheet has its dimensions measured as follows:
• Length (vernier calipers): 12.32cm
• Width (meter scale): 10.0cm
• Thickness (screw gauge): 0.245cm
(i) State the number of significant figures in each of the three measurements.
(ii) Calculate the area of the sheet and write the result with the correct significant figures.
(iii) Using your value from part (ii) and the given thickness, determine the volume of the sheet, again expressing the answer with the proper significant figures.
(iv) A report lists the volume as 30.2cm3. Comment on whether this reported value is acceptable with respect to significant figures and justify your answer.
