Problem

Let the focus be F(a,0)F(a,0) with a>0a>0 and the directrix be the line x=−ax=-a. A variable point P(x,y)P(x,y) moves in the plane. (i) State the geometric definition of a parabola with respect to FF and the given directrix. (ii) Using the condition PF=distance of P to the directrixPF=\text{distance of }P\text{ to the directrix}, derive the algebraic relation satisfied by the coordinates (x,y)(x,y) of PP and hence obtain the standard equation of the curve. (iii) Conversely, starting from the equation y2=4axy^{2}=4ax, prove that any point (x,y)(x,y) on this curve is equidistant from FF and the directrix, thereby confirming the locus interpretation.
