Problem

A student sets up an electric circuit in the school laboratory to verify Ohm’s law using a cell, a plug key, a fixed resistor, an ammeter and a voltmeter. In her first attempt she places the voltmeter in series with the resistor and connects the ammeter in parallel across the resistor. (i) Identify the mistake or mistakes in the way the two meters have been connected. (ii) Explain qualitatively how each mistake will affect the readings of potential difference and current obtained in the experiment. (iii) Describe the correct arrangement of the ammeter and the voltmeter in the circuit and justify why this arrangement gives accurate values required for verifying Ohm’s law.
