Problem

Two carts, A and B, move on a level, frictionless track. The 1.8 kg cart A travels due east at 4.0 m s⁻¹. The total linear momentum of the two-cart system is 25 kg m s⁻¹ directed 40° north of east. Cart B has a mass of 1.2 kg. (a) Draw a carefully labeled, scale head-to-tail diagram that represents the momentum of cart A, the unknown momentum of cart B, and the given total momentum of the system. (b) Using either measurements from your diagram or analytical methods, determine the magnitude and compass direction of the momentum of cart B before interaction. (c) Explain how your diagram in part (a) graphically demonstrates that the system momentum stated in the problem is consistent with your result in part (b).
