Problem

Four monochromatic beams have energies measured as E1=5.37×10−19 JE_{1}=5.37\times10^{-19}\,\text{J}, E2=0.842×10−18 JE_{2}=0.842\times10^{-18}\,\text{J}, E3=7.6×10−20 JE_{3}=7.6\times10^{-20}\,\text{J}, and E4=3.11×10−19 JE_{4}=3.11\times10^{-19}\,\text{J}. (i) Calculate the total energy of the four beams, expressing your answer in scientific notation and retaining three significant figures. (ii) Each individual energy is first rounded independently to two significant figures before addition. Perform this second addition and write the result in scientific notation. (iii) Determine the percentage difference between the results obtained in parts (i) and (ii).
