Problem
(i) Define the term "acceleration due to gravity" at the surface of a planet.
(ii) Two planets P and Q have identical radii, but planet Q possesses three times the mass of planet P. Explain, without carrying out any numerical calculation, how the surface gravity on Q compares with that on P.
(iii) Jupiter has a radius nearly eleven times that of Earth while its mass is about three hundred and eighteen times Earth’s mass. Using suitable reasoning based on these figures, explain why the surface gravity on Jupiter is only about two and a half times that on Earth and not vastly larger, despite Jupiter’s much greater mass.
