Problem

A newly discovered planet X has mass 5.0×1024 kg5.0\times10^{24}\,\text{kg} and radius 4.0×106 m4.0\times10^{6}\,\text{m}. (a) Calculate the acceleration due to gravity on the surface of planet X. (b) Determine the height above the surface at which the acceleration due to gravity on planet X will fall to one-half of the surface value. (c) Find the depth below the surface at which the acceleration due to gravity will become one-half of the surface value. (d) Which of the two distances obtained in (b) and (c) is smaller? Give a brief physical reason for the difference.
