Problem

Two identical whistles are blown simultaneously, one in warm humid air at 30 ∘C30\,^{\circ}\text{C} near the sea shore and the other in cold dry air at 5 ∘C5\,^{\circ}\text{C} on a hill station. No numerical calculation is required. (i) In which place will the sound reach an observer 500 m500\,\text{m} away first? (ii) Explain in detail why the chosen condition allows sound to travel faster. Your answer should refer to the qualitative effect of temperature and moisture on the properties of air that govern the speed of sound. (iii) Mention any two everyday situations where the difference in the speed of sound under varying atmospheric conditions becomes noticeable.
