Problem

A student wishes to represent the magnetic field around a bar magnet by drawing lines on paper. (i) Define magnetic field lines and state any three characteristic features that such lines must satisfy. (ii) The student’s sketch shows two lines beginning at the north pole, intersecting each other midway, and reaching the south pole independently. Identify any two errors present in this sketch and give reasons for calling them errors. (iii) Draw a corrected qualitative sketch of the magnetic field pattern for the bar magnet. Explain how your sketch conveys the relative field strengths near the poles, at the midpoint of the magnet, and far away on the axial line.
