Problem

A circular loop of copper wire of radius 5 cm5\,\text{cm} lies flat on a horizontal table. A current of 3 A3\,\text{A} is set up in the loop in the clockwise sense when viewed from above. (i) By logical reasoning, state the direction of the magnetic field at the centre of the loop. (ii) State the direction of the magnetic field at a point on the axis of the loop that is 10 cm10\,\text{cm} above its centre. (iii) A small magnetic compass is placed at a point PP situated 5 cm5\,\text{cm} due east of the centre in the plane of the loop. Predict the initial deflection of the compass needle and justify your answer. (iv) Sketch qualitatively the magnetic field-line pattern of the loop, indicating clearly the regions of stronger and weaker field.
