Problem

A uniform thin square metal plate of side 0.60 m0.60\,\text{m} and mass 4.0 kg4.0\,\text{kg} has a circular hole of radius 0.10 m0.10\,\text{m} drilled out at its centre, leaving a square frame with a circular void. The plate remains uniform in thickness and density. (a) Calculate the mass of the material removed when the hole is drilled. (b) Determine the moment of inertia of the removed circular portion about the axis perpendicular to the plate and passing through the centre of the square. (c) Hence find the moment of inertia of the plate with the central hole about the same perpendicular axis.
