Problem
Standard potentials for three different galvanic cells are listed in the table below.
Cell Overall Reaction (balanced) E°cell (V)
A 2 Al(s) + 3 Cu²⁺(aq) → 2 Al³⁺(aq) + 3 Cu(s) +2.00
B Pb(s) + PbO₂(s) + 4 H⁺(aq) → 2 Pb²⁺(aq) + 2 H₂O(l) +1.69
C 2 Fe³⁺(aq) + 2 I⁻(aq) → 2 Fe²⁺(aq) + I₂(s) +0.24
The Faraday constant is F = 9.65 × 10⁴ C mol⁻¹.
(a) For each cell, calculate the magnitude (numerical value only) of ΔG° in kJ for the reaction as written above.
(b) Rank the three cells in order of decreasing thermodynamic driving force (most favorable to least favorable). Justify your ranking using the numerical results from part (a).
(c) For Cell C, predict whether the reaction will proceed spontaneously under standard conditions and explain how both E°cell and ΔG° support your prediction.
