Problem

A construction crane lifts a concrete block of mass 100 kg100\,\text{kg} vertically at a constant speed. (i) Calculate the power required to raise the block at 0.60 m s−10.60\,\text{m\,s}^{-1} (take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m\,s}^{-2}). (ii) If the crane’s motor can supply a maximum power of 1.0 kW1.0\,\text{kW} under these conditions, determine the greatest constant speed at which it can raise the same block. (iii) Explain why, for a given load, the power needed is directly proportional to the lifting speed.
