Problem

An electric iron is rated 1 kW, 220 V and an immersion heater is rated 1.5 kW, 220 V. Both appliances are to be operated together from a single wall socket that is protected by a fuse. (i) Calculate the current drawn by each appliance when working at its rated voltage. (ii) Find the total current drawn when both appliances operate simultaneously. (iii) The available cartridge fuses are rated 5 A, 10 A and 15 A. Select the minimum rating that will safely protect the circuit and justify your choice. (iv) If the user replaces the chosen fuse with a piece of copper wire of the same diameter, predict the likely consequences and give reasons for your answer.
