Problem

A block of mass mm is to be pushed along a horizontal rough floor by a force PP that makes an angle θ\theta below the horizontal with the block on the verge of motion. (i) Establish an expression for the minimum PP required in terms of mm, gg, μs\mu_s and θ\theta. (ii) Investigate how PP varies with θ\theta for 0∘<θ<90∘0^{\circ} < \theta < 90^{\circ}. Show that PP increases monotonically with θ\theta in this range. (iii) Hence prove that the least value of PP occurs when θ=0∘\theta = 0^{\circ}, i.e. when the push is exactly horizontal. (iv) Taking m=15 kgm = 15\,\text{kg} and μs=0.25\mu_s = 0.25, compute this least value of PP and compare it with the force needed when the same push is applied at 20∘20^{\circ} below the horizontal.
