Problem

A solid cubical metal block of side 5 cm5\,\text{cm} is completely immersed in fresh water. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2} and density of water =1000 kg m−3= 1000\,\text{kg m}^{-3}. (i) Calculate the volume of water displaced by the block in SI units. (ii) Determine the magnitude of the upward force exerted by the water on the block. (iii) If the same block is completely immersed in glycerine of density 1260 kg m−31260\,\text{kg m}^{-3}, calculate the upward force on the block in that liquid.
