Problem

A 40 W bulb (rated at 220 V) is mistakenly connected in series with a 1000 W electric iron to a 220 V supply. What is most likely to be observed and why? (a) The bulb glows very dim because the 220 V220\,\text{V} gets divided almost equally and only about 110 V110\,\text{V} reaches the bulb. (b) The bulb fuses at once as the low-resistance iron makes a very large current flow through the series circuit. (c) The bulb glows almost at its normal brightness while the iron hardly heats, because the bulb’s much higher resistance makes nearly the whole 220 V220\,\text{V} appear across it. (d) Both appliances work normally since each is rated 220 V220\,\text{V}, so the way they are connected to the supply does not matter.
