Problem

A variety of physical processes provide evidence for the dual nature of matter and radiation. (i) State the experimental criterion that allows one to decide whether a given phenomenon demonstrates wave behaviour or particle behaviour. (ii) For each of the following phenomena, identify whether it primarily establishes the wave nature or the particle nature of the entities involved and give one reason for your choice: (a) Photoelectric effect (b) Davisson–Germer experiment with electrons (c) Compton scattering of X-rays by electrons (iii) A fine, monochromatic beam of electrons emerging from an electron gun is directed normally on two parallel slits that are very close to each other. Qualitatively describe the pattern expected on a distant fluorescent screen and explain what this observation tells you about the nature of electrons.
