Problem

A cricket fielder throws a ball from the ground so that it lands back on the ground 120 m120\,\text{m} away. The initial speed of the throw is 40 m s−140\,\text{m s}^{-1}. Take g=9.8 m s−2g = 9.8\,\text{m s}^{-2}. (a) Calculate the two possible angles of projection that achieve this range on level ground. (b) For each angle obtained in part (a), determine the total time of flight. (c) For each angle, compute the maximum height reached by the ball. (d) Which of the two trajectories keeps the ball longer in the air? Which one carries it to a greater height? Justify your answer quantitatively.
