A short cylindrical bar magnet is released from rest along the common axis of a horizontal circular coil kept on a laboratory table. The north pole of the magnet faces the coil and the magnet moves vertically downward through the centre of the coil and then away from it.
Answer the following questions clearly showing the reasoning based on electromagnetic principles.
(i) As viewed from above the table, predict the sense (clockwise or counter-clockwise) of the induced current in the coil when
(a) the magnet is still above the plane of the coil and approaching it,
(b) the magnet is exactly in the plane of the coil,
(c) the magnet has just passed through the coil and is moving away.
(ii) Explain how each of the directions obtained in part (i) is consistent with the law of conservation of energy.
