Problem

An electric kettle rated 230 V,  1000 W230\,\text{V},\;1000\,\text{W} has its metal body connected to earth through a wire of resistance 1 Ω1\,\Omega. Owing to a fault, the live conductor touches the kettle body. (i) Calculate the current that will flow through the earth wire immediately after the fault occurs. (ii) The resistance of a human body with dry skin is about 50 kΩ50\,\text{k}\Omega. Determine the current that would pass through a person touching the kettle if no earth wire were provided. (iii) Compare the two currents obtained above and state which situation is safer, giving a brief reason.
