Problem

A householder switched on a television set, a mixer-grinder and several lamps from the same power circuit. The lamps became noticeably dim, but the fuse did not melt. Later, when the damaged insulation of two live conductors touched each other, the main fuse blew instantly. (i) Explain why the lamps became dim even though the fuse remained intact in the first situation. (ii) Describe what happens inside the circuit when two naked conductors touch each other directly. (iii) State any two precautions that can be taken in domestic wiring to avoid such accidents. (iv) Distinguish between overloading and short-circuiting with respect to their causes and the magnitude of current involved.
